The Role of Spiders in Pest Control

spider control Squamish BC - almanages pest and wildlife control spider in handAlthough spiders might be a nuisance for many homeowners, pest control companies like ours actually find allies in them. Spiders make our job a lot easier by trapping a wide variety of insects. This helps us determine the level of activity among the species they capture, whether they are prey or predators, and whether they are considered pests or nuisances.

One of the benefits of their insect trapping services is the webs they create. As a pest control technician myself, I actively seek out these allies and their webs. From a trained eye perspective, these webs can provide valuable insights into gates and access points used by rodents. By carefully examining these webs and assessing how they were disturbed, as well as the direction in which the web is trailing, I can determine potential paths and the usual direction of travel for small mammals such as rodents, squirrels, bats, and others. This information is particularly useful when inspecting hard-to-access areas like attics and crawlspaces.

SIDE NOTE:  Consider leaving the cobwebs intact if you are prepared to ask a professional to come exterminate spiders from your property.

Interior and Exterior Spider Control

Spiders are one of the few insect species we can treat even on a rainy day. They tend to find shelter and weave their webs away from rain, ensuring that our pesticide is not diluted or washed away, which is something we strive to avoid.

The process of exterminating spiders, whether inside or outside a building, follows a similar principle. We recommend avoiding treated interior areas for a minimum of 4 hours. Typically, we prefer to perform the treatment in the morning, allowing you the flexibility to return earlier in the day. However, if you prefer, we can also accommodate treatments later in the day. A treatment outside does not require you to leave and usually dries within 10 minutes on a sunny day.

The treatment itself is quick to perform, usually requiring only around half an hour.

Different Spiders - Different Hiding Places to Control

Spiders are generally solitary creatures and can hide in various areas such as under decks, in crevices, under soffits, around fences, and between branches. Inside a home, they often seek dark and covered spaces like attics, crawlspaces, and garages. Additionally, they are frequently attracted to moist areas such as bathrooms and mechanical closets.

Each spider species has different preferences when it comes to preying on other insects. Leveraging our knowledge, experience, and a range of treatment options, we can provide you with the best solution to exterminate an infestation.

Peacock Jumping spider

Indeed I will! When I was very young, I befriended a Jumping Spider named Jimmy. To this day, I have never heard of a jumping spider biting anyone. While they are capable of biting, their venom is not a threat to most people. You can read more about it in the link I provided above.  Jumping spiders are actually excellent hunters. They can effectively control the population of other insects inside your home. Throughout my many years of experience in insect control, I have never encountered an infestation of jumping spiders. Personally, I wouldn’t mind having them in my home, as they each have their own unique personalities and fascinating appearance.

How could anyone harm such a cute little bugger like this?

How to recognize a jumping spider? Jumping spiders have a distinctive appearance, often resembling cartoon characters. They are fast and typically range in size from 1/4 to 3/4 inch. There are over 4000 species of jumping spiders found worldwide. Some species display vibrant colors and beauty, while others are simply adorable to observe. If you’ve had a rough or gloomy day, getting yourself a jumping spider as a pet can bring joy. They are naturally cautious, but with time, they can be trained and make wonderful companions.
