wildlife exclusion on roof - almanages pest control and wildlife services

Each species comes with its own set of challenges, and some can cause more damage than others. The good news is that all of them can be effectively excluded from your homes with specific wildlife control techniques tailored to each species, backed by a solid plan.

As Antoine de Saint-Exupéry famously said,

A Goal Without a Plan is Just a Wish

It’s clear that wild animals don’t belong inside your homes for numerous reasons. Based on our experience, the most common animal species to invade homes in Squamish are:

Why wouldn’t I exclude wildlife from inside my home?” you may ask. While animals can obviously cause damage to your home and transmit diseases, there are situations when it might be worth reconsidering. In rare cases, the damage caused by the exclusion work itself may end up being more expensive to fix than simply allowing the animals to mature and leave on their own when they are old enough to do so.

It is difficult and obviously expensive having to repair a roof, exotic wood panelling, solid marble walls or intricate handcrafted wall designs.  it becomes quickly evident that such considerations must be taken into account. Temporarily allowing your furry visitors and then asking us to return and block their entry point once they have left can sometimes make sense.

Bear on Wildlife Camera

Not sure what is roaming on your property?

An affordable mean to figure out what, how many or when wildlife intrude on your property is to monitor for activity with a wildlife camera.

We often suggest this economical wildlife control method before resulting in trapping.  By the way, we do not trap bears, only small animals and rodents.

People also ask:

Mice are undoubtedly the most challenging animals to exclude, primarily due to their small size. In fact, even a gap big enough for a pencil to fit through is often sufficient for them to find their way inside your home. Older homes, in particular, are susceptible to developing gaps as seasonal changes, humidity, or dryness can greatly affect wood structures. Locating these cracks and gaps can be an arduous task, especially when access is limited for the purpose of blocking them.

When woodpeckers engage in “drumming,” it is actually a positive sign. Drumming is a territorial behavior they use to establish their presence in an area and discourage other woodpeckers from encroaching. Typically, they drum on hard surfaces like metal that produce resonant sounds. However, if a woodpecker starts pecking at your siding or roof, it is likely attempting to create a nesting cavity, which is problematic. Acting promptly is crucial, so we recommend contacting us immediately. We can install deterrents to prevent further damage. Waiting until they lay eggs is not an option, as woodpeckers are a protected species.

This is an important question. On average, raccoon babies need to reach the age of 3-4 months before they are capable of leaving the attic independently. There are instances where it is advisable to allow raccoon kits to mature and exit the attic on their own. Several factors contribute to this decision, including the potential costs and damages associated with removing them from your attic. For example, if you have high cathedral ceilings with expansive wood paneling, removing the raccoons would require cutting through the paneling or creating an access point on your rooftop. While this may not be too challenging or expensive for roofs with asphalt shingles, it can present difficulties for roofs made of steel. Additionally, some locations may be inaccessible altogether. In such cases, the typical course of action is to let the babies mature until they are capable of leaving on their own, and then proceed to block the entry point once they have vacated the attic.

Undoubtedly, the most cost-effective and efficient method to prevent animals from breaching and invading your home is through regular maintenance and repairs.

Wildlife exclusion set on roof - almanages pest control and wildlife services

Years of experience have taught me that the most common areas prone to invasion are attics and decks. In fact, about 95% of attic incursions occur at the point where a gable roof meets the main roof of a house. Many builders in the region use thin clip-on soffit material for ventilation, which can be easily ripped open by raccoons or squirrels, similar to tearing a sheet of paper.

On the ground level, animals often exploit gaps underneath decks, sheds, or other structures. If these openings are left unsealed, it’s almost guaranteed that at some point you will have raccoons, skunks, or rats making nests beneath them.

The most effective preventive measure is to proactively protect these vulnerable areas in order to deter wildlife from taking advantage of them. We strongly recommend contacting us for an inspection, during which we can suggest methods that will significantly increase your chances of avoiding the need to seek professional assistance from a wildlife control company like ours.
