Limiting Squirrels Attraction to Your Homes
There are several ways to minimize squirrels and other rodents from being attracted to your homes. Squirrels are quite straightforward creatures: they eat, drink, reproduce, and store their food as close to their nest as possible. That’s about it. Some of their behaviours include chewing, chasing away other squirrels, and protecting their food sources and young.
If the habitat near your home has a natural food source and an abundance of trees, you may simply need to learn how to coexist with them and try not to inadvertently attract them closer to your home.
Here are some steps you can take to limit Squirrel attraction:
- Squirrel-proof your bird feeders.
- Aim to reduce water sources, such as rainwater buckets or other items that can collect water in your yard.
- No matter how tempting, avoid feeding them. I know they’re adorable, and even we find it hard to resist tossing them a peanut.
- Inspect your home for holes that squirrels could exploit.
- Consider calling professionals like us to walk through your property and help identify potential problems.

Squirrels Exclusion
Squamish Squirrel Control, Not Squirrel Extermination. Given the choice, our main concern is to control or prevent squirrels, chipmunks, or other rodents from entering your homes. One tool in our arsenal that’s frequently employed is a ‘one-way door device,’ as shown on the left. It allows rodents to exit but prevents their re-entry. Once we are certain there are no more squirrels in your home, we then patch the hole without resorting to lethal methods. This technique is by far the most humane and is 99% effective.
What of persistant Squirrels
Unfortunately, there are times when squirrels won’t cooperate and insist on chewing at your home no matter what you do. In such cases, we have no choice but to remove them from your property to halt the damage they are causing to your home. It’s regrettable, but this is the only effective solution.
Trapping Squirrels
Trapping squirrels is similar to trapping other rodents like rats or mice. We inspect your home, and if we are unable to find the entry point, we strategically install traps indoors where we believe the squirrels are likely to trigger them. Squirrels are incredible climbers and are adept at hiding, leaving minimal traces of their movements, unlike rats or mice. We might employ a special dust that becomes fluorescent when exposed to a black light, allowing us to follow their trail until we locate the hole they use.
In situations with a high number of squirrels, we may also use exterior bait stations to control the population. Unlike mice or rats, we never resort to using poison when dealing with squirrels; traps are the only humane devices we use.
